<b><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Sea Lion for Andrew</span></b></div>
<br />
When I write to Andrew, who is currently in boot camp for he Navy, I like to include a bit of artwork for home. Last time it was a pained fox. This time I wanted something more ocean related. So I made him a Sea Lion. The book called it a seal, but because the back flippers are rotated forward it is a Sea Lion. Seals cannot do that with their flippers<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next time I will try to make small cuts in the head to make the little ear flaps hat sea lions have. Seals do not have them.</div>

The book I used for inspiration on this project was <u>The World of Origami</u> by Isao Honda, Japan Publications Trading Company, 1965. I first saw this book at the public Library in Panorama City. I was later able to buy a copy for myself. A few years ago I loaned it to a neighbor, didn't get it back, so went on line to get another copy. I' glad it is still in print! It is easy to follow and has a lot of very fun figures.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">MORE ACORNS!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I made my biscornu I also wanted to make a small bag to go with it. So I have created a pair of small bags, one as a gift and one for myself, that use the acorn pattern. This time I used a couple of leaves and tossed in a wider interlace pattern for good measure. They measure 4 5/8" by 4 3/4" or 4 7/16". One has a seam down the center back, the other at the side. I may do more with the side seam. The openings for the ties are different and that is the only real reason for doing the seam down the back: the two buttonholes match. Minor detail there. Side seam makes a smoother uninterrupted back for more embroidery. I used the 18 count Aida cloth in oatmeal (fabric color, not the breakfast) for a nice background color that would blend with the greens and browns. Lining is a cotton print of leaves in shades of green. Ties were made of a thin polyester lining fabric.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIC939UAbs7T_o3Wlwus-5F2laYPtVLIxsxqG7RndlbkIU2PcV7JxssEPxQxbQMbwFKLalB0d6N0W23-MbrZImb9ldj02pX0Cqt5rkAZJQGgSzU_UT3mPVGNkJ_FvOVQSdgmyLwpnxujw/s1600/Acorn+Bags+Back.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIC939UAbs7T_o3Wlwus-5F2laYPtVLIxsxqG7RndlbkIU2PcV7JxssEPxQxbQMbwFKLalB0d6N0W23-MbrZImb9ldj02pX0Cqt5rkAZJQGgSzU_UT3mPVGNkJ_FvOVQSdgmyLwpnxujw/s1600/Acorn+Bags+Back.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I added a tiny button to the center front of one. Haven't decided if I want to add one to the other bag.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The bags are personalized with cross-stitched initials and the names spelled out. In the one where the seam runs down the back it made it a little tricky when stitching in a line that happened to be centered in the design. I sometimes had to take two stitched to make it show up.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For the end of the ties I wanted to do something different. I wanted something that would go with the small size of the bags. I decided to try the Fimo clay that I had on hand. Bought it years ago, never got to use it. When baked at 265 degrees F for 30 minutes, it dries to a nice hardness that I think will be chip resistant and hold up pretty well. I poked deep holes into the acorns so the tie ends could be poked down into the acorns and glues in place.</div>
<br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Acorns!</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><br /></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was watching "My Neighbor Totoro", a delightful Hayao Miyazaki film, when I came up with the idea for what might really finish off my little Pikachu bag. I was pretty sure that I wanted some traditional Elizabethan Blackwork patters to set it off, in black, of course. I thought that it would go well with the bright yellow figure and blend with the black that was already in the cross stitch. I could have gone with red, but that would not have shown up the blackwork design well enough and would have been too bright a color and overpower the main motif. </span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But what should I use? I thought of maybe some bug and leaf patterns like the illustrations that accompany the end credits of the film. Then the film answered the question for me. Mei, the young girl in the film, tries to lure out the totoros by setting out a trail of acorns for them. I figured that Pikachu was like a totoro in that he, too, is a mythical creature from Japan. Okay, not a strong connection, but it opened the door. Now I was on the search for some acorn patterns.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I blazed a trail over the wide expanses of the plains of examples till I found one that had possibilities. But now I had another problem: I needed an exact stitch count. I allowed a specific seam allowance. I wanted it centered and to be as high as the Pikachu. Pikachu was an uneven number of stitches high. For weeks I poured over graph paper, flipping, shortening, and rearranging the motifs. I modified, counted, then modified again. This was supposed to be a quick project done on just a scrap of 18 count white Aida cloth! But finally I got it right, and these are the results.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I wanted a wrap-around pattern which meant that I would have to consider the embroidery stitching up the back seam. It seems to have worked pretty well.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For the size of the bag, just 4"x4" when completed, I wanted something other than the longer tippets that I used for the other Pokemon dice bags. I visited several bead shops till I found something that was small enough but still had a large enough aperture through which the tie ends could be secured. To close off the open ends, I glues in a small garnet beads. Red against the gold? Perfect!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Pokemon Dice bags are fun to make! They're colorful, easy, and you can embellish them any way you like. They make great gifts! Here is one that I made for my son Sean for Christmas I used several patterns for the Beedrills and made a wrap-around picture.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG_lSC9j-3-94s5lvics1V9fwWdSqHhBF30UzcjyymAlTCGTsSVEpqPG0vcO8rLPagp_HnSsTPIEP5YRGDeBeH-2qtNj1EwQAIQiLdgVJXdhE406EbmD1nblQWvCYFMUWrcSB3qdDJnJY/s1600/Bedrills+before+finishing++bag.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG_lSC9j-3-94s5lvics1V9fwWdSqHhBF30UzcjyymAlTCGTsSVEpqPG0vcO8rLPagp_HnSsTPIEP5YRGDeBeH-2qtNj1EwQAIQiLdgVJXdhE406EbmD1nblQWvCYFMUWrcSB3qdDJnJY/s1600/Bedrills+before+finishing++bag.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">For this bag I used a 14 count Aida cloth in pale blue, then used a cerulean blue acrylic paint to dry brush the darker streaks across the fabric before I started the cross stitch. Then I added water to the paint to thin it out and added more streaks. This not only makes the background more unique, it adds a sense of action for the Beedrills.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">The bags range from about 5 1/2" wide and about 6" deep. The bags are good for holding card decks as well as gaming dice. I made this bag for my son Sean.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I did the cross stitch using cotton floss for the main bodies and heads, but the wings are filled in with an iridescent "Light Effects" DMC white floss that is a fiber core wrapped in plastic. It looks really good on the wings! I used a rayon thread for the drills which gives them a bit of a shine.</span><br />

<div style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">
I make the ties using either a fabric that matches the lining fabric or any color that will look good with the bag. Strips can be about 14" long and a about 1 1/4" wide. Fold the strip in half, stitch almost down the middle (you want a little less fabric at the cut edge), trim the cut edge a tiny bit to make sure it will fit inside, then turn inside out.</div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Now we have pretty little MEW. Mew looks good on a bale blue background with free form clouds of different kinds of white thread, such as the regular cotton, shiny rayon thread (which is a bit harder to work with), and the iridescent "Light Effects" plastic floss. I filled in the clouds with various blackwork stitch patterns so that each cloud is different.</span><br />

This is a bulletin board that I made many years go. I got it out and I'm using the backs of my business cards to write down the projects. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Notice the use of colors: Gules, Sable, Argent and Azure. Where have we seen those before?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg94umJRQcA5227MTGLw7a-v1K7iMncRvwhvMDW5SLIdwx1WsQ7hhKEyM9Q1IJwtPqQNOp_3oMEM0QJcE_P0Ea1tMTT9MKjuheNi1FeGM7HT_9qVlnoc39hVYLjavARnyuSyDPabclSHJU/s1600/Project+Cards.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg94umJRQcA5227MTGLw7a-v1K7iMncRvwhvMDW5SLIdwx1WsQ7hhKEyM9Q1IJwtPqQNOp_3oMEM0QJcE_P0Ea1tMTT9MKjuheNi1FeGM7HT_9qVlnoc39hVYLjavARnyuSyDPabclSHJU/s1600/Project+Cards.JPG" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Most cards just have one project on them. But if I have several projects that are related, and space left on the card, I'll write down two or three projects.<br /><br />I I slip them under the grosgrain ribbon, again grouping them in groups of similar projects. If a project is more important or needs to be done first, I will place it by itself, so nothing else covers it up and hides it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I haven't decided what to do with the cards once I have completed the project - put them in a small box and keep them as a reference?</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12589627943892872181noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4195298914813329869.post-29939494951786241562015-03-22T15:09:00.001-07:002015-03-22T15:09:04.967-07:00<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.3199996948242px;"> Two For One Special!</span><br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhprj6R6froTe_zrm2ChyJohy9hwKu4yTxbdkpQku689UBElNyu3S8Wr3KwTacw6m-qa6KEADzBPp9lZm_zrvmcqHtUHwyaLiVQf1TbTqNyd0JBFwqic5Kyqm_PGJV12biTRqOBwklgIEo/s1600/Biscornu+Title+Plate.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhprj6R6froTe_zrm2ChyJohy9hwKu4yTxbdkpQku689UBElNyu3S8Wr3KwTacw6m-qa6KEADzBPp9lZm_zrvmcqHtUHwyaLiVQf1TbTqNyd0JBFwqic5Kyqm_PGJV12biTRqOBwklgIEo/s1600/Biscornu+Title+Plate.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
So, what's a Biscornu? How do you do it? According to Wikipedia, it is pronounced "<i style="background-color: white; color: #252525; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px;">bee-ss-corn-uh</i><span style="background-color: white; color: #252525; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px;">)". I thought that it would be like "bis" as in biscuit, "corn" as in corn, and the "u" as in you like biscuits and corn. Good enough. It comes from the French word that means "</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #252525; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px;">skewed, quirky or irregular." So it's sort of like me.</span><br />
<div>
<span style="color: #252525; font-family: sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #252525; font-family: sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px;">It's a pincushion, basically, an eight-sided figure that is stitched so that it has eight sides, stuffed,usually with a button or two in the middle to make it puffy, and big enough to fit in the palm of your hand. It could be decorated with tassels and beads, so I imagine, with the shape it takes, it could also be used as an ornament. I will have to experiment more with these.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #252525; font-family: sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #252525; font-family: sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px;">But until then, this is how you make a biscornu. Enjoy!</span></span><br />

<span style="text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="text-align: justify;">These are the tools for stuffing. I used the 100% Polyester Stuffing that you can get just about anywhere, and a stick from a roasted ear of corn that I sanded down to make sure it was smooth. I've also used chop sticks that I sanded. You just want to make sure that the pointed end is rounded enough so that it doesn't poke through your fabric. This point helps to direct the batting into corners. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">What's New at the Orange County Fair?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">After years of thinking about it, Rob finally nudged me to submit a few things. Good idea! Here are a few pictures, with some positive results.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">They covered it over with a large sheet of clear plastic to help keep it clean...or to discourage people from touching it. <span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b>T</b></span>his is how I participated in the Cross Country Clearprint project! This is a project by the makers of the Clearprint Vellum sketchbooks where you decorate one page from one on the 10 books that they have going across the United States. I found this project posted on Facebook. All I did was to go on the site, <a href="http://www.clearprintpaperco.com/#!cross-country/c1oyi">http://www.clearprintpaperco.com/#!cross-country/c1oyi</a> and follow the directions. They just need to know who you are and where to send the book. What you get is one of 10 books that travels across the country, collecting art, and you also get a free vellum sketchbook to keep just for participating. It's a pretty good deal; one page of artwork gets you your own Clearprint Vellum Book. There are a few rules as to what they can accept for the subject matter but the rules make sense because the artwork is getting posted on line. The idea of the project is to reach out to artists and give them the experience of trying out the product. You can use any medium you like on one page, then send it back. The only catch is that you have one week to complete the work. So this is what I did and what I found out about the paper. I used a combination of inks, watercolors and colored pencils.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLCd7Fw-QwpmQh8DymNyA3blivTW0IXaWqG-6LkTps5yDm2-0rKJGQLI2EHJ1QdtA0d0BgB-w87lg3SaVDvjpiZuuMQmy88fWCArguPevr7GzgIcxalf-hN5lyT3fwq9hjr9MUMB8vRT0/s1600/Calligraphy+on+Clearprint.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLCd7Fw-QwpmQh8DymNyA3blivTW0IXaWqG-6LkTps5yDm2-0rKJGQLI2EHJ1QdtA0d0BgB-w87lg3SaVDvjpiZuuMQmy88fWCArguPevr7GzgIcxalf-hN5lyT3fwq9hjr9MUMB8vRT0/s1600/Calligraphy+on+Clearprint.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The advantage of working with this kind of paper, which is basically a sturdy tracing paper, is that you don't need to line it for the calligraphy. You can do all your preliminary work on another sheet of paper, deciding on which size nib or pen point that you want to use, and which style of calligraphic hand you want, and figure out which works best. Then just slip the lined paper beneath the vellum and calligraph. No guidelines to erase! This also helps with placement of the components. Slipping rough sketches behind the vellum helps with composition. I decided on a smaller dragon in flight, a motif that I though would look better than a large dragon character that would be place behind the monk who is writing about the method of roasting marshmallows. (He has a little "Press" card tucked into his headband.)</div>
</div>

<div>
<br />
<br /></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj31YFMw_094-ftYHcX0e9DfkO43gKdqPs7d2LQCp7K51aWSlUNk6Fqfr7wsqOPjP0oeErMi_rKdQFSGm9p80nEOYeC1fnNsyJtMdTG321Byg3RSs26JZubRNUJwoFFXeIxLx0AOyLTXBY/s1600/Back+of+the+page.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj31YFMw_094-ftYHcX0e9DfkO43gKdqPs7d2LQCp7K51aWSlUNk6Fqfr7wsqOPjP0oeErMi_rKdQFSGm9p80nEOYeC1fnNsyJtMdTG321Byg3RSs26JZubRNUJwoFFXeIxLx0AOyLTXBY/s1600/Back+of+the+page.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The fun of this paper is that you can do artwork on both sides of the page. It is sturdy enough that neither the inks or the watercolor I used bled through. However, imaged painted would show through from one side to the next. The bird and tiny beasties hiding among the interlaced vines at the bottom are seen as something hiding in the mist, or the distance.</div>

Along with your page within the book, each participant gets to add to the cover. The cover of the book is of a heavier weight vellum that is smooth and takes ink well. I added my griffin and positioned him to relate to the decorative motif that the previous artist drew. I used a fine point Rapidograph pen over a rough draft that I drew to place the character next to the first figure so that they would relate. I hope that once the book is filled, the front and back covers will also be displayed on the Clearprint site so we can all see how they turned out. I'm sure it will be a big surprise! </div>

This is what you place between the inner pages since they are thin and drawing on one page can leave indentations that show up on the next page. You can see just how thin here.</div>

I hope you enjoyed my contribution to the Cross Country Clearprint project! I had a good time doing it and got to experiment with a new type of paper for me. I found that this paper holds up to a moderate amount of water, erases well and has a nice plate finish that is not too slippery. It does have a habit of the corners curling up slightly while working on it. If you don't use a heavier piece of paper beneath the page on which you are working, it will leave impressions on the page beneath it. But knowing what to expect from the paper allows you to prepare for it. Clearprint Vellum products are made by Chartpak, Inc.</div>

There is a really nifty way to work on pyrography if you do
not want that hand-made look but want a
really professional finish and be able to duplicate it as many times as you
want. This is by using the laser

and you can use your computer to format your design.</div>

Alas, this is a machine that I do not yet own. I am still doing it by hand, one piece at a time. This in itself is not a bad thing. There is a lot of satisfaction for making each piece a unique work of art. However, it does take time and a good deal of it. But in the world of art, you can approach a project in a variety of ways and each way can be perfectly acceptable and pleasing.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12589627943892872181noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4195298914813329869.post-44337459429336569772014-02-25T23:55:00.003-08:002014-02-25T23:55:45.187-08:00East Indian Adventure...almost!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b> Tonight I am going to share a bit of adventure with you! I love to travel, even if it is just to some place where I can capture a bit of a different culture. This last Saturday Rob and I went to the Ethnic Fashion Fest which was being held in La Mirada. A friend of ours, Faizah Cooper, had invited us, via facebook, to come. None of us knew what to expect outside of that this was featuring clothing from India and Bangladesh. Faizah is from Bangladesh so she was already familiar with the clothing styles. She grew up with it! I've had East Indian neighbors in the past and love the gorgeous saris that the women wear. So this is some of what we found - Enjoy!</b><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_hArdw4SL1Jzf9N8fa4En6JHucoWLwrhrOOkcdd896abrgNnSz1QcD2kAAl4-n3gjf4-eYGEd_7TVX8_w6BQq0XhaElMhyphenhyphenp9X3uIIjUczqN4BRxLrHoU0Ip1HH8hhXcRLbZXjS2niLEs/s1600/Rust+full.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; display: inline !important; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_hArdw4SL1Jzf9N8fa4En6JHucoWLwrhrOOkcdd896abrgNnSz1QcD2kAAl4-n3gjf4-eYGEd_7TVX8_w6BQq0XhaElMhyphenhyphenp9X3uIIjUczqN4BRxLrHoU0Ip1HH8hhXcRLbZXjS2niLEs/s1600/Rust+full.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a><br />

It came as a simple kit that my husband and I found in a small but wonderful quilt shop in Northeastern Arizona a couple of years ago. I love things with wings and I could immediately see the possibilities for embellishment! The print is called the Golden Angel and Lamb quilting panel by <span style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.michaelmillerfabrics.com/inspiration/freequiltpatterns/golden-angel-redux-quilt.html">Michael Miller</a>.</span><br />

I made one for my Mother-in-law, Diane, who presented it to her church where it is now displayed.</div>

It was understood that the second one I would make to sell. The steps were simple: just arrange the pre-printed strips together around the center piece. It was all straight machine stitching. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After that the real work begins. I worked from the center outward. That meant that the angel's face would be done first. Eyes and lips and eyebrows got embroidered with the outline stitch and the satin stitch with cotton floss. For the green ribbon in the hair I used rayon floss to give it a very satiny shine. Freshwater pearls were then stitched in.<br />Next I used some metallic threads to highlight the thin, ribbony tendrils that curl down from the headband. I used threads that I had in my floss stash. One was a <a href="http://dmc-usa.com/Products/Needlework-Threads/Embroidery-Threads/Metallic-Embroidery-Thread.aspx">DMC</a> Metallic thread #5282 which is a polyester/viscose content Thicker cords were couched in and the thin strands were embroidered in with the backstitch. This added a nice illumination around the face.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next come the tiny garnet beads. They are stitched in around the neckline and on the cuff of the gown. The tricky part of stitching in the garnet beads as that they can have sharp or slightly jagged edges. This can cut threads. You need to stitch through the bead 2 or 3 times to secure them. I used a thin beading needle to accomplish this. The good thing is that once they go on, they are not going to be moving around like they would be of they were threaded into a necklace. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiD2tlWUWSiaE5xH967-Y4Xe0ihD-3C5QEQgtbbg1HrdLV1PoPKEHAip2wU4OL6mpDjPLw84A7rF1xk7YhEUhpSX_h8TJA5ba7dnUS6uzt3vS8pCUeLqLiyjcWqM_K6YWMsoS87q693jc/s1600/Frensh+Knots+Lamb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiD2tlWUWSiaE5xH967-Y4Xe0ihD-3C5QEQgtbbg1HrdLV1PoPKEHAip2wU4OL6mpDjPLw84A7rF1xk7YhEUhpSX_h8TJA5ba7dnUS6uzt3vS8pCUeLqLiyjcWqM_K6YWMsoS87q693jc/s1600/Frensh+Knots+Lamb.JPG" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ah, yes, the little lamb. This was a fun part. Some shades and shadows were already part of the print so I used those as a guide for which shade of Baroque Crochet Cotton (a DMC product made in Brazil) and DMC "Cebelia" (made in France). Both are a type of crochet thread that works well for the candlewicking French knots that I used to create a rich texture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To make the lamb stand out, I stitched a small backing to the back of the lamb using a thin cotton piece of cotton fabric. I stitched this down around the lamb then loosely stuffed it with some polyester batting. Touches like this make a piece interesting, especially if you are a tactile person like I am when it comes to fabrics!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is what I did for the back: plain black cotton fabric and loops made out of the remnants of the border fabric so the quilt can be used as a wall hanging. However, I did place them down enough from the top edge so if you wanted to use it for a cover, you could. This later effected how I did the quilting but the loops are big enough that they could be pushed aside and the hand stitching done.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next I sewed the back to the front with a layer of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Warm-Company-Batting-90-Inch-108-Inch/dp/B000YZ5EV6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1392509133&sr=8-2&keywords=Warm+and+Natural">Warm and Natural</a> to be the inner layer. This is better to use than a polyester batting, I think, because it does not pull through with the needle when you are stitching. It is light-weight, warm and doesn't puff up the quilt too much. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Stitch with right sides together, batting on the outside. Remember to leave a big enough gap along the bottom of the quilt to pull the quilt right side out. Once you have the outsides out, pin to make sure that the inner batting layer is smooth and even. Hand stitch the gap closed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I then did machine stitching around some of the edges of the borders to tack the front, backing and back together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I quilted important lines to bring out the shape of the wings, hand, the sleeves and the skirt. I used the running stitch using heavier quilting threads that matched compliment background fabric colors.</div>

Last part - the beads!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used larger garnets, hematites and and some pretty frosted cerulean glass beads for the boarders and the flowers. For the crosses I used metallic and glass beads. Since there was a variety of the cross motifs I did each one a bit differently but only did four crosses on each side. I did not want to overdo the effect and besides, from the experience I had with stitching beads onto the trim of a Saxon style tunic, those beads add a good deal of weight!</div>

Here are a couple of quickies! I love draw string bags! I always find uses for them and they are fun to make and to give as gifts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQCRhMXe66cFglPyJQ0lRxhlOuRqKV_G2aFv62LF1c2Tp6KFpvU_VY3fxtnWM-lxBC7U1cFOuERPZKacPLjCJBHFQnsXVFvohodd18Iqt5PES5sFm-Au1h3NNiCt42z-gkYfMWyLvxP5g/s1600/Tudor+Rose.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQCRhMXe66cFglPyJQ0lRxhlOuRqKV_G2aFv62LF1c2Tp6KFpvU_VY3fxtnWM-lxBC7U1cFOuERPZKacPLjCJBHFQnsXVFvohodd18Iqt5PES5sFm-Au1h3NNiCt42z-gkYfMWyLvxP5g/s1600/Tudor+Rose.JPG" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This Tudor Rose is done in Blackwork stitches but I used shades of pink and green for the rose colors.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB6beJ72KAYfEjhyQk8xLDmGCPUkJg6lDI3waFnAFbL-CHf1aa5kAJpl8x4wbxUrWkz8L1WGUkWFOl9Po-NmQdWLi8_9vqpi08byS5bLlRBcpKZ0IlLMpOxQdnZEVdO0ZbZMH9zdFjnrU/s1600/Gold+Dragon+Dice+Bag.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB6beJ72KAYfEjhyQk8xLDmGCPUkJg6lDI3waFnAFbL-CHf1aa5kAJpl8x4wbxUrWkz8L1WGUkWFOl9Po-NmQdWLi8_9vqpi08byS5bLlRBcpKZ0IlLMpOxQdnZEVdO0ZbZMH9zdFjnrU/s1600/Gold+Dragon+Dice+Bag.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is one of my little dragon bags. It is a cross-stitch pattern that I designed. I like to give them as gifts and add my friends' names to make them special.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As soon as I can get the pattern scanned, I'll add it to this post. </div>

This curtain is called a Noren. I needed something to block out the light from a street lamp at night. Traditional Noren, from what I read, are constructed of three layers of fabric. This not only helps to block out light, it also helps to block out cold, not that that's a problem in Southern California. Here Sean and Andrew display my Noren for me.<br />

This fish is appliqued on. I used a fabric with a Japanese print that looked very much like origami paper. I used smaller stitches and reduced the pattern size to represent fish scales using the "Nowaki" (Wind Blowing Grasses) stitch.<br />

For the rocks along the side of the stream I used the "Seikai-ha" (Blue Ocean Wave) stitch.<br />

Sashiko literally means "Little Stab" because you are taking a series of running stitches, "stabbing" through all three layers of fabric. This is my first attempt at the art form. I got quite a pleasant surprise after I hung up the curtain. Where the stitches passed through the fabric there was suddenly a pattern of tiny lights! The needle had punched through the fabric creating tiny holes, and you could clearly see the pattern that was stitched when the sunlight shown through from behind it! I hope to do more sashiko stitching in the future.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12589627943892872181noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4195298914813329869.post-50768035678049549342014-01-14T21:48:00.002-08:002014-01-14T21:48:13.378-08:00<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is all done freehand using scrap threads. I did it back in the early 80's when I took a bus from Reseda to downtown L.A. for work each day.</div>
